Dr. Leah Susser graduated summa cum laude with honors in Molecular Biology from Colgate University. After earning a B.A., she worked at the National Cancer Institute studying breast cancer. She obtained her M.D. from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and then completed psychiatry residency training at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell. In residency, she gained expertise in reproductive psychiatry and women’s mental health with extensive training through the Payne Whitney Women’s Program. She has published on Women’s Health. She has presented at national conferences, including at the American Psychiatric Association’s Annual Meetings and the Biennial Perinatal Mental Health Conference, where she received an award for her work. She also received an award from the Association of Women Psychiatrists and a teaching award from Weill Cornell Medical College in 2016. She has been involved in teaching medical students and residents on topics related to mood disorders and reproductive psychiatry, and is involved in training residents in reproductive psychiatry in the Payne Whitney Women’s Program. She believes in understanding symptoms in the context of a person’s life circumstances, and understands the importance of collaboration with other providers. She is empathic and uses an evidence-based approach to treatment that includes non-pharmacologic wellness strategies, psychotherapy and/or medications to alleviate psychiatric distress, when appropriate.
