Brendan Finnerty
Brendan M. Finnerty, MD, FACS, is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine and an attending surgeon at New York Presbyterian Hospital – Weill Cornell Medical Center.Dr. Finnerty is a board-certified general surgeon with expertise in endocrine and neuroendocrine surgical oncology, which includes benign and malignant diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal gland, and gastrointestinal tract. He has a focus in providing minimally-invasive surgical options, including laparoscopic and robotic techniques, with the main goal of decreasing post-operative pain, scarring, and length of hospital stay. Dr. Finnerty also provides bedside diagnostic services during your initial surgical consultation, including neck ultrasound examination, fine needle aspiration biopsy, and flexible laryngoscopy to evaluate your vocal cords.Dr. Finnerty is also the Director of Interventional Endocrine Surgery. He has expertise in radiofrequency ablation and ethanol ablation of thyroid nodules and cysts. Dr. Finnerty’s academic interests are in clinical and translational research in the field of Endocrine Oncology, with a focus in studying the mechanisms of tumor growth and metastasis in endocrine and neuroendocrine tumors. He has authored many publications in peer-reviewed journals as well as book chapters in surgical textbooks, and has presented his research at national surgical meetings including the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, North American Neuroendocrine Tumor Society, and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract. Dr. Finnerty is a member of professional associations including the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons (AAES), American College of Surgeons (ACS), North American Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (NANETS), and American Thyroid Association (ATA).Dr. Finnerty graduated from Northwestern University in 2005 with a B.S. in Chemical and Biological Engineering, with a specialization in Biotechnology. He then obtained his medical degree in 2010 from the University of Illinois College of Medicine where he was awarded the Bamberger Scholarship for academic excellence. After medical school, Dr. Finnerty completed his surgical residency at the New York Presbyterian Hospital – Weill Cornell Medical Center in 2017, where he was selected as Administrative Chief during his final year. During his residency, he also dedicated two years to complete a research fellowship in Endocrine Oncology, where he studied the biological mechanisms of metastasis in pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, and published articles investigating thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and neuroendocrine diseases.
