About Dr. Hu
Dr. Michael P. Hu has always wanted to make a difference. “I really wanted to help people. A career in medicine provided me that opportunity to really feel like I could make that meaningful difference in society,” he says.
His family supported this calling. “What is great about my family is they always motivated me to strive for excellence but did not dictate my choices,” he explains. “My parents encouraged me to find my own path, and a career in medicine was a natural choice, offering the greatest possible personal satisfaction.”
Dr. Hu received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh and his bachelor’s in computer science from Duke University. As an OB/GYN, Dr. Hu provides comprehensive women’s health care, including annual physicals and Pap smears, contraception counseling, routine cancer screens and more.
He chose his specialty because of his mother’s experiences. “After moving to New Jersey, my mother continued to see her OB/GYN in Philadelphia. When I asked her why, she explained she felt a connection to him because he had delivered both myself and my brother. He also discovered her breast cancer. She trusted him,” says Dr. Hu. “She had established a relationship with him, and she was willing to drive two and a half hours for her annual exam. That resonated with me and influenced my decision to choose OB/GYN. To me, this is not just a job, but a career.”
This story has shaped Dr. Hu’s practice philosophy. “I care about patients’ well-being and about how I treat them. To me, it’s not just about the science; it is about treating the patient with respect and involving them in the decision-making process. My philosophy is that we are a team looking to achieve the same goal,” he explains.
"Every patient is different, and every patient scenario is unique. Thus, I have learned from each patient how to tailor my approach to achieve excellent, personalized patient care."
In His Own Words
What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? My first job was working for an office design firm. I commuted 4 hours each day, learning the ins and outs of CAD design. This job taught me the importance of hard work and teamwork.
If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased), who would it be and why? I would love to have dinner with Ben Franklin. His life was so fascinating. He was there at the birth of our nation, and I would love to hear his observations about that important period in our nation’s history. He was also a scientist. He created the lightening rod and helped developed the science that we still use today. He invented many things, including the Foley Catheter. I would love to hear his thoughts about politics.
In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? What are your hobbies, interests? I am most passionate about my children. I take raising them seriously and hope to raise them to be upstanding people. Besides my work, this is the greatest contribution I can give back to my family. In regards to my hobbies and interests, I love playing video games, golfing, scuba diving and astronomy.
What is something most people don’t know about you? That I am a Disney super-fan – I’ve been to Disney World 9 times.
