I can't believe I have waited this long to write a review on my experience. Back in the summer of 2017, when I was still in college, I went in for a routine checkup to get tested for STIs at the Weaver Crossing OB/GYN clinic. I didn’t have a set provider at the time, so I was paired randomly with Jodi Tolley. One of the questions Jodi Tolley asked me at the start of my appointment was how many people I had slept with. *Side note* This is the only provider that has ever asked me this question, EVER. I answered truthfully. When I told her my answer she immediately criticized me. Her face was one of disbelief and she visibly looked disgusted. I was only 19. She told me that I should only be having sex with people that I truly love and that I was being used by these men. She said she knew this because she had sons herself who did this to women (you should start holding them accountable for their treatment of women!). I looked at her and told her that I have sex because I like how it feels, that I'm using them too. This was the last thing she expected to hear, she didn't have any words. However, even though I stuck up for myself, I felt so ashamed during and after this appointment. I went into the bathroom at the location at Weaver Crossing and cried. As time went on, I realize more and more how messed up that experience was. Providers that specialize in women’s health should be the ones who make you feel empowered about your body and who give you the tools necessary to do so while also being safe. Even though I absolutely hated having to go through this, I am SO grateful that I did. I had no clue what I wanted to do with my life entering college. But, because of Jodi, I discovered my passion for public health and making sure women feel informed and empowered about their bodies. I went on to graduate with a Public Health degree. In the process, I interned for two nonprofits that aim to inform women about their bodies and give them the tools to feel empowered. I am currently in the process of obtaining my master's in public health. Thanks Jodi!!
