She was born and raised in Racine, Wisconsin, and attended Carthage College, where she graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry. Dr Minkowski earned Master of Science degrees in Biomedical Science and Health Administration from Rosalind Franklin University. She attended medical school at Chicago Medical School, graduating first in her class of 198 students.
After medical school, Dr Minkowski completed a one-year internship at the University of Chicago before moving to Houston, Texas, to attend a residency at the Cullen Eye Institute at Baylor College of Medicine.
