About
Elizabeth Brokamp, Licensed Professional Counselor
Not feeling like yourself lately? Unsure of whether your current path is going where you would like to go? It can be so hard when how you feel doesn't match the put-together, successful exterior that others praise.
The therapists at Nova Terra Therapy offer smart, effective, down-to-earth strategies for helping you to sort out what you want to keep (success can feel awfully nice!) from what you would like to tone down or get rid of, like anxiety, perfectionism, and self-doubt. We want to help you feel like the best version of yourself and also have a powerful set of tools for handling the challenging times when they come again.
We offer counseling services to adults in Burke and the surrounding areas using a variety of treatment techniques and methods, including CBT, Solutions-Focused Therapy, and EMDR. We tailor our work in collaboration with you so you aren't getting a generic or canned treatment plan; we will look together at what works best for you, what you want, and how we are going to get you there.
Folks with a wide range of issues, including depression and anxiety and trauma, seek counseling at Nova Terra Therapy but we do have some special issues with which we work often:
Trauma treatment -- not just the "Big T" trauma that most people think of, like the aftermath of a fire or a catastrophic car accident, or a shooting, but the so-called "Little t" traumas, which are events that stick in our consciousness that may never be the subject of a newspaper headline but are nonetheless significant in their impact, importance, and emotional hold on us. These may include situations like a friendship breakup, a scary encounter with an animal, a big disappointment like the loss of a job, a loved one's illness, or some other circumstance that made a big impression on you that has been hard to "get over" or to shake. While we don't always recognize ourselves that these are traumas, they can have a profound impact on our quality of life and on how we see ourselves and our world. We use both talk therapy, CBT, and EMDR to help address this range of issues in order to maximize your chances at real and lasting relief.
Highly-Sensitive People (HSPs), whom we prefer to call "highly attuned," and introverts -- The word "sensitive" is often used as a pejorative when in fact, this high degree of attunement can be an asset, if not an outright superpower. If you want therapists who get why you always need a plan when going into a new situation, why you know an exit strategy in advance, and why you seem to need more downtime or time to decompress than others, then you have found a good match. You won't have to start at the very beginning explaining how your "quirks" are important to maintaining your equilibrium; instead, we can focus on the areas where your needs may clash with the world's expectations and how to effectively manage that disconnect and how to communicate your needs to partners and loved ones.
Folks with reproductive trauma such as infertility, high-risk pregnancy, pregnancy loss, or termination -- It can be so heartbreaking when your longed-for plans don't come to fruition in the way that you hoped or when you experience a profound loss that other people just don't seem to recognize in a meaningful way. We can work together and give you support while you grieve, re-group, and figure out where you want to go from here. You can tell your story as many times as you need to; you can feel safe, accepted, and nurtured in your grief experience in a way that can be hard to find out in the real world.
Don't see your issue here? Just reach out and ask. We work with people with a variety of issues and circumstances and would be happy to get to know you and your situation better. If we know of someone who specializes in your issue or who would be a better fit outside of our practice, we will let you know and offer you a referral.
