He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, and then completed a cardiology fellowship at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey. Board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and its subspecialty Board of Cardiovascular Disease, Dr. Vellanikaran is also board certified in echocardiography. He is a member of the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association and the American Society of Echocardiography.
