After her grandfather passed away from pancreatic cancer at the age of 54, Lisa D. Curcio, MD, became determined to make a difference in the lives of cancer patients. She feels that it is her duty to help improve the delivery of cancer care and optimize communication with patients and their families. Her ultimate goal is to make each patient whole again after a diagnosis and to avoid tearing them apart with the process.
At the beginning of her career, Dr. Curcio performed a wide range of cancer surgeries. It was not until her own breast cancer diagnosis at the age of 37 that she decided to narrow her focus. As a breast cancer surgeon, she can now help women gain strength from their diagnosis and guide them through every step of the journey.
"As a breast cancer survivor, I can honestly relate to the emotions, fears and realities of a diagnosis. I can be a mentor through the process as well as an example of what cancer can and cannot do."
Dr. Curcio strives to help her patients regain control of their lives after a cancer diagnosis. She wants her patients to understand that their cancer does not define them and that through education and mentorship, a cancer diagnosis becomes a battle where victory is the only possibility.
"I do think that most of my patients know that for me, this is not a job, but a passion. What seems impossible at the onset of this journey becomes surmountable and what does not kill us makes us stronger. There is no greater satisfaction!"
Dr. Curcio grew up in a small town in northeastern Pennsylvania. With the continuous support of her parents, family and mentors, she became part of the first generation in her family to attend college. She is honored to be a part of MemorialCare and strives to optimize the patient experience in an ever-changing healthcare environment.
