Why I chose to pursue a career in healthcare: I grew up in a medical family--my father is an internist and my mom is a registered nurse. Medicine has been an important part of my world, one way or another, from as far back as I can remember. I wanted to learn and understand the science of medicine--the way in which the body and its organ systems work, mechanisms of disease, and the therapeutic means that we use to prevent and treat illness. Beyond the science, the power and primacy of the doctor-patient relationship was always evident in my family; I knew that I wanted to have the opportunity to be involved in this way, too.
