Why I chose to pursue a career in healthcare: I am a third-generation nurse. After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh in 1993, I immediately began working in cardiology. It wasn't until I had my first child that I realized the challenges of breastfeeding. I was 24 years old and even with being a nurse, I faced many difficulties. After receiving help, I was able to successfully breastfeed. I now have five children, ages 9 to 25 years old. I switched my career focus to women and children, became board certified in lactation, advanced my degree to a board-certified Family Practice Nurse Practitioner and recently obtained my Doctorate in Nursing Practice.
