Dr. Esquilin’s kindergarten teacher knew he would someday become a doctor. Even then he dreamed of becoming a pediatrician—the only kind of physician he knew—and later planned to hang a shingle in his community as a general pediatrician and take care of babies. But in his first year of medical school, a faculty member whose daughter had died of cancer spoke to his class and left an impression that persists to this day. From that moment, he decided to subspecialize in pediatric hematology/ oncology. “I loved the science, but I learned there is nothing more noble than helping a family through the loss of a child,” he says.
Dr. Esquilin graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in neuroscience from Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. He studied medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, New York. He completed his pediatrics residency at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital and returned to Columbia University Medical Center for his fellowship in pediatric hematology, oncology and stem cell transplantation. During the final year of his fellowship, he worked part-time at North End Family Health Center in Newark, New Jersey as a general pediatrician serving low-income families.
He has been honored with a number of awards, including the Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. Scholars Award which recognizes excellence in research by physician-scientists, the American Society of Hematology Research Training Award for Fellows, a national prize recognizing excellent research, and the Arnold P. Gold Humanism in Medicine Society, a national medical society recognizing excellence in the practice of humanistic medicine to which one is elected by peers.
