As a youngster, I had some medical issues. A wonderful orthopedic surgeon helped see me through those issues. His example inspired me to give back to others in a similar way. For me, giving back starts with building a partnership with my patients. My guideline is asking myself, “If this was one of my family, how would I want them treated?” Patients and their families are people who need guidance, reassurance, and honest conversations to help achieve a well-lived life. I listen to my patients and engage them in decisions. I make complicated topics understandable for them. A successful outcome means that a patient feels empowered to make a change. They understand their medical concerns, and they are willing to provide feedback on our collaborative decisions. The most rewarding thing about my work is realizing the goal I set long ago. I’m having a positive impact on everyone I can meet during my lifetime in hopes this will flourish for generations to come.
