I have spent 25 years working with children and young adults in different roles from teacher to camp counselor. This wide range of experiences has given me the ability to connect with young people of all ages. I have a variety of games, but my favorite still remains "Uno". There are three qualities that I have and that I admire in people who work with children. 1) A willingness to listen 2) A desire to be in the child's world. 3) Unwavering nonjudgmental attitude. I hope the therapist you find to work with your children has these qualities.
Problems that bring young people to therapy can be overwhelming and it helps to have an ally who has seen these problems before. I am interested in conversations that give young people the space to explore what makes them wonderful and what dreams and aspirations do they have.
Then I would like to explore how has this wonderfulness and dreams been taken away by the problem that has brought them to therapy? What attempts or successes have they had in resisting the problem and what does that say about them? Narrative lead conversations can help with many problems.
