Kelly Wheaton Kleinman, PhD

Dr. Kleinman is a Clinical Psychologist on the faculty at Dartmouth's Geisel School of Medicine. After completing her postdoctoral fellowship at Dartmouth, she joined Hanover Psychiatry where she specializes in the care of young children and their families. Dr. Kleinman has extensive training and experience in the treatment of a broad range of childhood psychopathology, including anxiety, depression, disruptive behaviors, and developmental and learning challenges. Additionally, she has a strong background in the treatment of early childhood trauma, spanning a number of traumatic events, including abuse, car accidents, dog bites, and medical procedures. Additional areas of special interest and expertise include healthy adjustment to parental divorce, the birth of siblings, and adoption, grief and loss, and health concerns, including weight, sleep, and toileting.

Dr. Kleinman provides individual and family treatment, utilizing a number of evidence-based practices, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and play therapy techniques. In addition, she conducts psychoeducational evaluations involving intelligence and academic achievement measures and consults with school staff to assist in the creation of effective interventions.

Dr. Kleinman's goal is to create an environment in which children feel safe to express themselves in the manner which is most natural, whether that is art, talk, or play. She strives to develop a specialized treatment approach to best meet the unique needs of the families with whom she works.

Services In addition to individual and family treatment, Dr. Kleinman offers group services. "My Two Homes" is an 8-week group for children who are coping with parental divorce. The group provides children with a safe environment, in which they will be encouraged to recognize and express uncomfortable feelings and challenge thoughts of self-blame. Children will learn and practice creative strategies to cope with family changes, navigate transitions between homes, and communicate effectively with parents. I just came across Kelly's profile and had to write a few words. I highly recommend Kelly to any parent looking for a therapist for their child. The work she did with my daughter was incredible. My daughter loved working with Kelly. She would even remind me about the appointments! It has been over a year since they had their "good goodbye" and my daughter still talks about her. My daughter walked into her first session as a shy, anxious girl and left treatment as a confident young girl who isn't afraid to try new things. Kelly is definitely in demand but made my daughter feel like she was her only client. I can't thank Kelly enough for all she has done for my family. She is one of a kind!
