Barbara Melton has been in private practice in downtown Charleston since 1989. She does psychotherapy with an emphasis in a number of areas, as well as mediation, guardian ad litem work, visitation oversight, anger management, critical incident stress management, and more.
Barbara Melton employs a variety of therapy techniques in working with her clients, tailored to her clients' specific needs. Among others, she uses cognitive behavioral techniques, dilectical behavior therapy techniques, person-centered therapy and Gestalt techniques, and often asks clients to complete homework items to maximize their therapy dollars.
She is known for her work with clients who engage in self-injurious behaviors (adolescents and adults), as well as sexual addiction and alcohol and drug problems. She works with trauma survivors on identifying triggers and helping them cope with the daily stressors of living after the trauma.
At her office at 122 Alicia Dr., Summerville, SC 29483, Barbara Melton also sees couples to help them work on communication skills and enhancing their relationship. This includes couples who are not married, and/or same-sex couples.
Her goal is to help clients recognize that their problem behaviors are often not the actual problem, but merely a symptom of what is really at the core of the problem. Clients often discover that once they deal with the issues that cause them pain, the behaviors that were self-destructive often subside. Barbara Melton helps clients enhance their coping skills in order to replace the behaviors/symptoms which are negatively impacting their lives.
