Veterinary Neurology
Kathy Andres, ACVIM
Veterinary neurology is the branch of medicine that treats diseases of the nervous system: the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles in pets. This encompasses such common problems as epilepsy, herniated disks, spinal and head injuries, meningitis, and cancers of the nervous system.
Why Work With a Veterinary Neurologist?
While general practitioner veterinarians can diagnose and treat many neurological health problems, often your veterinarian will recommend you see a neurology specialist, particularly in complicated cases. A veterinary neurologist has the training and experience needed to provide the highest level of care for both medical and surgical neurologic conditions.
A board-certified veterinary neurologist is a licensed veterinarian who has obtained additional intensive training in veterinary neurology and neurosurgery. There are less 300 veterinary neurologists in the United States today.
