About
Larry O'Connor, Marriage and Family Therapist
I work with individuals to live and relate authentically and giving consideration to their individual capabilities and intents. Too often we limit or live in isolation from ourselves, our beliefs, and zeal, or what we want from relationships. Too often the desire for change comes as a reaction to a dissatisfaction with our self or current circumstances, and can compel us to dismiss the exceptional qualities we already possess. Change isn't about dismissing, but accepting and acknowledging your aspirations, and intentionally actualizing these.
My style is active, informal, and humorous. I don't fit people I work with into theories. I try to understand a person's circumstances and concerns by listening and responding in ways that clarify before offering suggestions or strategies. Clients often express feeling comfortable with me.
My areas of experience include: Relationships, Separation and Divorce, Depression and Anxiety, Identity and Life Direction, Transitions, Men's Issues, and Addiction.

Improving relationships involves recognizing how our prior experiences influences our current relationships. Both individuals co-create the dynamic of their relationship. The tricky part though is understanding how, and accepting its cause and effect, rather than right or wrong.
In healthy relationships individuals are able to openly communicate concerns, without reprimand, or fearing their partner personalizing what they've said. When individuals anticipate reprimand or dismissal, conflicts remain un-resolved, so when new ones arise, not having constructive experience repairing conflicts only leads to more conflict. I encourage couples to develop Differentiation: in which individuality can mutually exist with commitment. The opposite is Enmeshment, becoming entangled by giving up one's identity to avoid repercussions--and later resenting it.
I have been in the field of counseling since 1998, practicing psychotherapy at the pre and post-graduate level, including supervised private practice with adults, couples, children, adolescents, and families, prior to sole private practice.
My areas of experience include: Relationships, Separation and Divorce, Depression and Anxiety, Identity and Life Direction, Transitions, Men's Issues, and Addiction.
I have graduate degrees in English/Creative Writing and Marriage and Family Therapy. Before practicing psychotherapy full time, I taught Composition, and Creative Writing courses at the University, Community College level.
