About
Geri Charley, Licensed Clinical Social Worker
Through my years of experience as a psychotherapist, I've learned that we are not alone in life if we know and understand ourselves.
Since I entered private practice in 1988, I have worked with adults in individual therapy, as well as with couples and with families during their difficult times. These times can be complicated and painful. We may be grieving the loss of a loved one, or the loss of a marriage, or loss of health to illness. We have transitions in life, as an empty nest, or our own aging. Sometimes, there is no specific loss or event, and then it is difficult to understand why we feel fearful, or anxious, or sad, or lonely, or empty. But we do.
Relationships can also be challenging and may lead us to question ourselves, or our spouse, partner, friends, family. Ineffective Communication is often identified as "the culprit" in troubled relationships. But relationships are complicated. And respectful communication is complicated and usually not the goal when we are fearful of not being heard or accepted. It is important to express our needs to our spouse, partner, friend or family clearly and respectfully. It is important to listen to the needs of our spouse, partner, friend or family without defensiveness. It is then that we are able to carve a path to more rewarding and more respectful relationships.
Through my years of experience as a psychotherapist, I've learned that we are not alone in life if we know and understand ourselves. I've learned that when we allow others to know us, we are more likely to feel heard and understood, valued and loved for who we are. When we respect ourselves, we can then offer respect and understanding to others. This is the foundation for effective communication.
