About
Michael Koontz, NMD
Retired Chiropractor and Naturopath, Dr. Michael Donovan Koontz, drew his last breath as he left this earthly world at the age of 76 on March 20th, 2022 in Carmel, Indiana. He was a loving husband and father of four. He had a zest for life, a passion for learning as well as helping others with their health challenges through chiropractic and nutrition. He wasn’t a big fan of watching TV. He called it “The Boob Tube” and would often say “watching too much TV will rot your brain”! It was rare to find him not reading something, it didn’t matter if it was a book, a newspaper, a magazine, or even an article online. He admired Owls because they represented Intelligence, Wisdom, and Patience, and he had several wood, marble, and glass carvings of them.
He was born on March 9th, 1946 in Bloomington, Indiana. He was the oldest of two sons to the late Robert Koontz, and Mary Koontz (Ham) where he was raised in Muncie, Indiana. Growing up he was an Alter boy for his church, a newspaper boy, and a member of the Boy Scouts of America where he was proud to have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. He enjoyed going for walks, hiking, and fishing which was surely nurtured by the time he spent as a Scout. He loved taking his family for vacation fishing in Wisconsin. He once hiked 80 miles of the Appalachian Trail with his two youngest sons, Michael and Travis, as part of a hiking trip setup by their Boy Scout troop. He was also a fan of going for short walks after a meal because he said it helped aid his digestion. Of course he also welcomed the occasional nap after dinner when at home or at a relatives house for a holiday dinner, but he would always say “I’m just resting my eyes”!
When his younger brother Daniel Koontz started Chiropractic school in Indiana he urged Michael to check it out for himself. Instead of attending the same school as his brother, he decided to attend Logan College of Chiropractic (Logan University) in Chesterfield, MO where he graduated in 1977 as a Doctor of Chiropractic. Before that he earned his bachelors in Biology at St Mary’s College. While attending Logan he was very proud to have become a member of the Delta Sigma Chi International Chiropractic Fraternity (Kappa Chapter) and urged his son Michael to do the same when he started chiropractic school. He later obtained his license in Acupuncture, and earned his degree as a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine from the American University of Integrative Medicine in Phoenix, Arizona in 2001.
He met the love of his life, Pamela Koontz (Frank), at the wedding rehearsal for her brother Stephen Frank and Patricia Frank (Turner) on May 25th, 1972. Michael and Pamela were married a year later on May 26th, 1973 at North United Methodist Church on 38th St. in Indianapolis, Indiana, and had two sons. This May would have marked their 49th anniversary and 50 years together. They were partners in life and in business. Pamela was the office manager for his chiropractic office, and later his Naturopathic office, focusing on the business allowing him to focus on helping his patients.
Besides his parents, Robert and Mary, Michael is preceded in death by his Uncle, Monroe (Monty) Koontz, the mother of his 2 oldest children, and the family dog Boomer who passed just a few months before him in which he said it was “a real hit to the ol’noggin”.
Left with decades of fond memories, he is survived by his wife Pamela Koontz in Carmel, Indiana, his brother Daniel Koontz in Phoenix, Arizona, his four children, Kraig Koontz (Kim) in Wilmore, Kentucky, Karmel Mayo (Robert) in Helena, Alabama, Michael Koontz II (Katerina Kampoli) in Athens, Greece, Travis Koontz in Carmel, Indiana, his two cousins Terri Lynn Koontz and Meredith (Mimi) Koontz of Lexington, Kentucky, brother-in-law John Frank (Kay), brother-in-law Stephen Frank (Patricia), sister-in-law Cindy Frank, 10 Nieces and Nephews, and 11 Grandchildren.
