HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE WITH THIS VET: My pet guinea pig began showing symptoms of a respiratory problem and I called this clinic because they were local and said they had an exotics vet. When I told them I had a guinea pig who was sick, Dr. Hastings said that he could take a look at him. He is not the exotics vet, but he seemed very confident in his abilities and knowledge, so I trusted him. He gave me a form of Amoxicillin to treat my guinea pig, and adamantly assured me it was safe for him to take. He even said "You could give him the whole bottle and it wouldn't hurt him." It turns out Amoxicillin is lethal for guinea pigs because their digestive system is very different than other mammals. This is also true for other rodents and rabbits as well, which is a fact he should have known. (See here: http://www.guinealynx.info/dangerous_medications.html and here: http://www.petmd.com/pet-medication/amoxicillin and for a more scientific explanation see here: http://www.trentonpethospital.com/antibiotic-use-in-guinea-pigs/) My guinea pig stopped showing signs of a respiratory problem after a couple of days, so I thought it was working. Dr. Hastings said to give it to him for 7 days though, so that's what I did. On the 7th day, I woke up and my guinea pig had mysteriously died. That day I learned about the effects of Amoxicillin on Guinea Pigs, and I was incredibly upset. I called Loxley Animal Hospital back and eventually talked with Dr. Hastings. He laughed it off, saying "You learn something new everyday." I was appalled. He then tried explaining to me the effects of the antibiotics, which I already knew, and basically blamed the drug for causing a toxicity that "can" happen in guinea pigs. He offered no apology or sympathy of any kind, but he did offer a refund. When I went to pick up my refund, however, he said he would not refund the cost of the office visit (a majority of the cost), saying he "still had to be there." Again, I was appalled. He prescribed a lethal medicine to my pet, offered no condolences and instead kept my money. When I was adamant about not wanting to have to pay for the office visit that killed my pet, he threatened to call the police to make me leave. Dr. Leo Hastings was not only ignorant, prideful and condescending, he was also insensitive and apathetic to the loss of my pet. He also made me pay for the office visit that ended up killing him in the first place. DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE.
