CHOOSING HOSPICE CARE DOES NOT MEAN GIVING UP Some people believe that the decision to bring in hospice caregivers implies the patient or family is “giving up.” The brother of one recent patient had this to say: “Involving Hospice Care Team is not giving up. It is focusing on the quality of time that you have left with your loved one.” One common misconception about choosing hospice care is that it means there is no hope. It is important to remember that symptom management and overall care does not stop when Hospice Care Team, Inc. becomes part of the care plan; they simply take on a different focus. Instead of aggressive treatment, the focus of the care plan becomes one of comfort, support and embracing life. Some patients have actually been discharged from hospice care because their symptoms improve. I wish that my family had called Hospice Care Team earlier. The doctors we felt were always trying to intervene and trying to help mom get better, but when the shift went from getting better to being comfortable, that’s when we realized that we haven’t considered this part of our journey. We are so glad that this is when Hospice Care Team was available.
