To the grieving sister - I'm so sorry for your loss. It sounds like your experience was not a good one. However, I would say that after having worked in a nursing home (not this one) you have to be careful how you take a review like this one. Many times staff are doing the best they can and are bogged down by family dynamics that make it difficult to keep the resident at the center of your focus. If your brother wanted to change who gets contacted that is his choice. The staff can only abide by that. In fact the staff can be fired and have their licensure pulled if they don't. No place is perfect, but what I appreciate most about The Spearly Center is that they have heart. They care for people who others turn away. They care for some of the most difficult situations for very little money too. They are not the fanciest but they have won me over because they are going in the right direction and put residents first.

My brother was placed in Juniper Spearly Center in January 2012. Suffering from diabetes, hypertension, and pron to seizures/diabetic comas. Upon arriving there he was given a rickady used walker and non-working oxygen tank. It was only when my sister went there to see him and I later called to speak with a supervisor did this get fixed... Myself and my sister were listed as my brother's medical power of attorney, but when we started complaining about the treatment my brother was getting the social worker got my brother to change whom he wanting medical information given to. Mind you, his cognitive skills were always in question from day one. His social worker would also sell him cigerettes. They sent him to dialysis without medial supervisor knowing he was pron to seizures and diabetic comas. He fell and hurt himself on several of these unsupervised trips.
My bother passed away three months after being placed in Juniper Spearly Center, he was 46 years old. To this day Juniper Spearly Center has never offered explination of what happened to my brother sighting HIPAA laws. They refused to let family come get my bothers personal effects. To this day I nor my family have been able to grieve properly for my brother... I have learned one thing from this experience if you have a family member in a nursing home stay active in the care they get and visit them as often as possible. Juniper Spearly Center has been rated poorly for a reason and dispite my bother's circumstances for being there he did not deserve they treatement he received. That's not to say all the nursing / social worker staff is bad, but they definitely need better training and continued education in nursing/social skills.
