Recently my grandmother was admitted to saint catherines after suffering a stroke. It is part of the providence park health services. The on-sight occupational, physical, and speech therapists are amazing and without them this center would be nothing. The therapy rooms are probably the cleanest places in the building too. The nursing staff however is overworked, understaffed, and most times on edge. Over half of the nurses are overweight/obese. In a facility that should be focusing on health and wellness having unhealthy nursing staff is just the tip of the iceberg. Dont let the common room pictures and furnishings fool you either. The center has worn out and ragged furniture. My grandfather who has been staying with my grandmother during the night on a pull out has been sleeping on a mattress with exposed springs, stuffing coming out, and a frame worn through and repaired with what looks to be clothes hangers. When I asked to get this changed for a new one the nurse on staff acted like this was typical and was easily agitated and defensive. She even exasperated an already touchy situation, when my grandfather not waiting to put anyone out tried to concede that it was fine for him to sleep on a mattress like that. Anyone, could see it is a health and safety hazard and needs to be removed. If the guests are sleeping on mattresses not fit for dogs, I cant imagine what the patients are sleeping on. It has been 3 days and counting (after my grandfather has already been sleeping on this disgrace of a bed for two weeks) and we still have not received an adequate replacement. When I went online to look at some reviews of the center I found that even the Texas Health and Human Services rating was a 1 out of 5 stars. On top of that the nursing staff due to under staffing has no real schedule to getting my grandmother clean and washed. And we often have to wait for help to go to the bathroom. Food at the center is also terrible. The website says it offers nutrition meals, but it does not. It offers low grade meats, often canned vegetables, and starchy potatoes all high in sodium and lacking nutrition. The only, and I mean only saving grace of the facility is the therapists. If it weren't for them this place would be little more than a cheap dingy hotel and even less than that. A cheap motel would have at least changed the mattress by now.
