They weren't very understanding or caring, and they didn't show empathy for my situation. I could tell I wasn't their primary concern. They could've used quite a few more staff members. Before you make a decision to place a loved one in Kirkwood Manor PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW. My father was in Kirkwood Manor for 2 weeks and it was the worst experience for him and my family. My father had lung cancer and had fallen a few times at the house due to weakness and issues with balance. He had been in another rehab facility located in San Antonio but was transferred to Kirkwood Manor because it was closer to our home. Prior to admitting my father we had read the reviews and visited Kirkwood and thought it would be a nice facility. Well, we were wrong, it was horrible. To start, the food was a poor cafeteria style menu. The meals were never hot, always room temperature if you were lucky. We brought my father meals daily because he never wanted to eat what they were serving. When he was in the dining room, I would listen to the other patients complain as to how horrible the food was. I witnessed many patients that had their families bring them food so they wouldn't have to eat the meals which lacked any nutritious value.
Now lets move onto the lack of nursing staff along with the nursing assistants which are worthless. My father needed to be on oxygen 100% of the time. He had a oxygen generator beside his bed and a oxygen tank on his wheel chair. A couple of times we would arrive to his room and he would be sitting in his wheel chair with the oxygen tube in his nose and the oxygen generator going. The problem was the oxygen tube was hooked up to the oxygen tank which was turned OFF. This happened a few times, other times it would be the other way around. He would have the oxygen tube in his nose and the generator wouldn't even be turned on. We even found him sitting in the dinning room waiting to eat and the oxygen tank was EMPTY. Yes, I complained but it didn't seem to change anything.
Having cancer and going through Chemo and Radiation therapy my father lost a lot of weight. He was at 190lbs when diagnosed and was at about 125lbs when he was in Kirkwood Manor. My father was always cold, he would sleep in heavy flannel pajamas or his exercise warm up suits. We had about 5 pairs of pajamas and 5 warm up suits for him in his closet. We went every day to see him so we would take his dirty clothes home with us to wash and bring the clean clothes back the next day. He would always remind the nurses that he was always cold and we would do the same. Many times my dad would complain that they wouldn't help change him into his flannel pajamas and just leave him with just his t-shirt on. One time we were there in his room and the assistants wanted to put a hospital gown on him to sleep in and we reminded them how cold he always was. Well, it seemed like this was too much work for them to put his pajamas on him, much easier just to throw a hospital gown on him.
These are just a few things we had to deal with in this facility. My father begged us each day to get him out of there. We wanted to bring him home because we were just as disgusted with this place as much as my father was. We were in the process of preparing our house for wheel chair access and for home nursing or hospice. Unfortunately we were too late, my father died in Kirkwood Manor. We received a call early in the morning that he had died in his sleep. We rushed over to Kirkwood to find him in his room with the other gentleman that was sharing the room still in his bed next to my father. They didn't have the courtesy to move my father or the other gentleman into another room. So as my family and friends are crying and coming in and out of the room, the other gentleman is lying in his bed and watching us. We were never greeted by the head nurse in charge or by any of the management of Kirkwood that morning. Evidently the nursing staff the night before was to lazy to change my father into his flannel pajamas because my father died only wearing a diaper and a t-shirt.

I wrote this review hoping that it would be read by someone in corporate office that may change issues with Kirkwood Manor along with hoping to spare someone else the pain my family has endured.
