In the early 1990's our 16 year old daughter was diagnosed with Opposition-Defiant Disorder. We coerced her into being admitted and over a span of 6-8 weeks she was transformed back into "herself." She is now a highly proficient and successful professional and will tell anyone who asks that her time at John Umstead Hospital was the turning point in her life. In assessment sessions we occasionally felt like specimens being talked about without regard to our presence. They used terminology that most laypersons would not understand and that added to our sense of invisibility. The ordeal was a trauma for our 12 year old son. Bottom line, it gave our daughter her life back and our son recovered nicely. We would absolutely do it again.

I was informed that they have a few problems at this facility. They sedate their paiteints morning to evening, giving them sleeping aids first thing in the morning, and after dinner. the food for paiteints also recived minimal food for all meals. They have them go outside twice a day and even in cold weather dont give any clothing suitable for cold weather, and withold information to the paiteints regarding legal matters. In my opinion this hospital is not safe or suitable for anyone. They also have multiple lawyer blogs on paitients being beat and not monitoring the paitients enough.They also have a pending lawsuit against them till dec 2010.
