Contrary to the other review of Dr. Segal I'd like to tell you about my GOOD experience with him. Dr. Segal treated me for several years, and the man is responsible for saving my life. During a very trying and troubling time, when everything in the world was black and there was no warmth in anything, Richard got me through the pain and suffering. I met him the night I was admitted to a hospital because my LCSW was afraid to let me go home alone. He was kind, forthright and honest with me at all times. When I was really upset he would just let me talk things out, offer advice, help keep me looking at the best possible horizon I could find, and helped to keep me moving. Eventually I did recover from the worst of my depression, and the best part was, he gave me the skills I needed to "live" with my condition and not let it control me. I still get depressed. I still have a lot of issues and problems that I deal with but I have the skills necessary to keep things in perspective and to know how to take care of myself so I don't fall so deeply into the depression well.

I have recommended many of my friends to Dr. Segal over the years. I know that he has helped many of them. Dr. Segal isn't afraid to recommend you to someone else that he feels would help you more. I've had doctors that keep you on the string just because they want your money. Not Richard. As soon as he thought I was well enough to go on my own, he was booting me out of his office! He did prescribe medications to me, and yes, they were expensive but guess what!!! Meds for mental illnesses are EXPENSIVE!!! You're not taking aspirin for a sprained ankle. Dr. Segal worked for quite awhile until he got me on a cocktail that worked best for me.

Dr. Segal is a wonderful individual and physician. I would recommend anyone to him with complete confidence and trust.

Dogmatic, indoctrinated, lacking in critical and independent thinking ability, dishonest (spoke with another doctor, a friend of his, about my case, thus violating HIPAA privacy laws), egotistical, more interested in pushing his own agenda and his own goals rather than helping his patients. He seems to need to take the role of the big man in charge attempting to intimidate his patients into taking the submissive, sequacious role. He's also a terrible cliche: bald, german-looking, stern in the face, and just in every way redolent of Freud. He seems to be trying to project an intimidating image and thereby keep his patients at a distance and in a submissive role.

He was totally unwilling to pursue treatment options that I suggested and the reason seemed to be only that I had suggested them (i.e. Pride). In short, he's an individual who puts his own ego and personal needs before the needs of his patients and in fact seems to have had no interest in helping me whatever. Very unfriendly gloomy guy, who, if I'm not mistaken, is in the prodromal phase of Alzheimer's. I cannot recommend emphatically enough that you not see this "doctor".

He gave me a useless prescription, and 8 refills at that, KNOWING that it was utterly worthless and wouldn't benefit me but actually CONTRIBUTE to the condition which I had come to him to resolve. This wouldn't have been such a problem if this medication had been cheap; the generic form alone is over $200.

He seems to belong to little cadre of amicable doctors who send patients on down to one another in order that his/her coffers should receive a good shakedown by each in turn until he has no money left. This happened several times. (I was recommended to Dr. Segal by Dr. Brown who admitted that Segal was 30-year-long friend of his. Segal in turn recommended to me a friend of his despite having it completely within his power to help me.) Very dishonest.
