Sophia Burns, MD

Sophia L. Burns, M.D., FACOG A native of Atlanta, Ga., Dr. Burns practiced in the Houston for more than 16 years before coming to join the team at the Women's Center of Beaumont in August 2009. She received her undergraduate degree in biology from Spelman College in Atlanta, Ga. She attended Tufts University Medical School in Boston, Ma., and completed her residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Dr. Burns is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology. Married with three daughters, Dr. Burns is fluent in both English and Spanish. Always with the goal of providing better care for patients and continuing her education, Dr. Burns began resarching new areas such as nutrition, allergy treatments and bio identical hormone therapies. Her interest in a more holistic approach to health care has grown significantly over the past several years. Using a functional medicine approach, which addresses the whole person and not just an isolated set of symptoms, with a strong emphasis on prevention, Dr. Burns uses an integrative, science-based approach to medical care combining traditional and complementary - alternative medical services. This approach focuses on nutrition, therapeutic diets, hormonal balance, detoxification and stress-management techniques. This holistic approach leads to improved health and wellness for the patient. Dr. Burns is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a member of the Texas Medical Association, the International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health, the Pan American Allergy Society and a member of the Harris County Medical Association.
