Marc Greenwald
Marc Lehrer Greenwald, MD, is the chief of colorectal clinical services and surgeon-in-chief at North Shore University Hospital. He is a double board-certified colorectal surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive and sphincter sparing techniques to treat a wide range of diseases and disorders of the small intestine, colon, rectum and anus. This includes diverticulitis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and colorectal cancer."I'm really fortunate to work with an amazing team at North Shore," Dr. Greenwald says. "They share my passion for helping others, and together, we are making a difference in the lives of so many people."After receiving his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Dr. Greenwald completed his residency at Montefiore Medical Center and fellowship in Hartford, Connecticut. He joined Northwell in 1991, and has held many leadership positions at North Shore University Hospital, including president of the medical staff and chair of the medical board.Dr. Greenwald established the Enhanced Recovery Program at North Shore University Hospital, implementing protocols that provide easy, safe and rapid recovery after surgery. "The program helps patients recover faster, get home to their families sooner and have better results," he says. His team also leads the way in delivering the best outcomes and highest quality care, consistently scoring above the national average in quality surveys.As program director of the rectal cancer multidisciplinary team, Dr. Greenwald works closely with other Northwell experts-including medical oncologists, radiation oncologists and colorectal surgeons-to evaluate every patient with rectal cancer. "It's my job to make sure best practices are used and patients receive individualized care with guided support from start to finish."Dr. Greenwald is an assistant professor of surgery at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and has won multiple teaching awards, including the Department of Surgery Award for Excellence in Operative Teaching. He is also a Castle Connelly Top Doctor.Decades of being a surgeon have given Dr. Greenwald a greater awareness about his patients. "It's not just about treating their illness," he says.
