I would be lying if I claimed to be committed to taking care of myself. Sometimes I just lose interest if too much is left to me. If you are anything like me, consider this:
My first disappointment came in June, 2009 when I requested to have Glyburide/Metformin renewed at Medco. I ran out shortly thereafter. Instead of faxing a prescription to Medco, New Century mailed one to me in expectation that I would somehow get it there. On my next visit to Westmoreland, I was scolded for failure to keep taking that medication. Westmoreland, however, insisted that New Century would not make the effort to fax the prescription to Medco "for the first time" (although my former PCP’s office had been faxing them to Medco ever since Medco became my insurance's mail order pharmacy).
I had heard someone complaining about a failure to have his prescription faxed to Medco while I was at the reception desk on a previous visit shortly after I had phoned in my request. I enquired about the request I had phoned in. The receptionist stated that my request had been faxed (or so I understood). I was thus not entirely surprised when a printed prescription from New Century arrived in my mail and none was received by Medco.
I did not again get around to attempting to deal with my lack of diabetes medication until 8/12/20 (or was it 8/13/2010). By then I had run out of : Gemfibrozil on or shortly after January 5, 2010; Simvastatin and Amlodipine on or shortly after June 5, 2010; and, Levothyroxine, Lisinopril and Paroxetine on or shortly after June 22, 2010.
I left the request on New Century's Poughkeepsie Office "Refill Line" (Call (845) 483-5858 and select Option 2 to hear what callers are asked to do). I asked that the Glyburide/Metformin and Gemfibrozil scripts be faxed to Medco. I asked that the other 5 medication scripts go to my local supermarket pharmacy. Although the “Refill Line” had given me notice that it could take up to 5 business days to get the prescriptions out, I checked at the pharmacy on Saturday, August 14. None of my new prescriptions had been received. I requested the pharmacy phone me when the prescriptions came in.
On Tuesday, August 17, I phoned New Century. Via messages relayed to and from Dr. Westmoreland, I was told that the prescriptions would be filled for only a single month supply and then only after I had made an appointment for an office by August 31. I insisted that less than two weeks would not be enough for the medications to overcome my having gone totally without medication for from 2 months to almost 14 months. I was then threatened with “removal from the program”. What that meant, I can only guess. I am not aware of having been in any program.
My wife tells me that the doctor cannot prescribe without an examination because to do so when writing the prescriptions could be called failure to provide “due diligence”. When our dogs need examinations, medication, etc., their vet is on the ball with e-mail, postcard and even phone call notifications. I call that “due diligence. I believe that Dr. Westmoreland and New Century have not provided “due diligence” to my needs since early January and certainly since early June. I believe that the insistence on visitation prior to writing prescriptions at this time has much more to do with bottom line than any sort of diligence.
