Wisdom Teeth The wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last teeth to erupt in the mouth, erupting somewhere between 16 and 25 years of age. Due to a lack of space where they should erupt, it is frequently necessary to have them removed. This is best accomplished before the roots of the tooth are completely formed, again in the 16-25 year period. By removing the third molars, it is possible to prevent severe infections and pain associated with the eruption of these teeth and decrease the chances of operative complications with surgery. Dental Implants Dental implants are considered the State of the Art in replacing lost teeth. They are a pure titanium root replacement that is inserted into the bone, allowed to heal and then a crown is attached for chewing. Placing an implant is one of the least painful procedures we do in our office. Most patients report very minimal discomfort after surgery. The reason implants are the treatment of choice is because they will keep the supporting bone from shrinking away and do not require destruction of adjacent teeth for a fixed bridge. Bone Grafting This is often necessary when there is a severely infected tooth to be removed or if the tooth has been absent for several years before we replace it with an implant. The grafting procedure involves harvesting a piece of bone from one area of the body and transplanting it into the defect site. The graft is then obtained with a titanium screw and allowed to heal for 4-6 months before placing dental implants. Facial Trauma Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are well versed in treating facial trauma. We can treat almost any fractures or lacerations in our office using deep conscious sedation or light general anesthesia. Types of trauma frequently seen in this office are: broken jaws, facial laceration, orbital trauma, sinus bone fractures, tooth avulsions and tongue lacerations. Orthognathic Surgery Orthognathic Surgery can be defined by looking at the meaning of the word. Ortho refers to the straightening, aligning or normal position; and gnathic refers to the upper and lower jaw bones. Therefore, orthognathic surgery is the surgical repositioning of the upper and lower jaws to place them in a corrected anatomic position. This type of surgery requires admission to the hospital for complete general anesthesia in the operating room. Oral Pathology Treating oral pathology involves either the surgical removal of benign and malignant tumors and medically treating oral diseases with drug therapy. Any biopsy performed in our office will be submitted to an oral pathologist for a microscopic diagnosis. The microscopic diagnosis, coupled with the clinical presentation will dictate the final treatment of the disease.
