Dr D is an excellent dentist. His hygienist, Beth, is the best!

Description of Experience:
I requested an appointment for general cleaning and X-rays. Office was not the Taj Mahal but was clean and relatively modern. Front office staff were friendly and hygenists professional and friendly also. Dr. Ducote was basically friendly in his nature. His approach was, however, predatory in his hard salesmanship relative to procedures I neither needed nor wanted.
Overall Comments:
Dr. Ducote came in and immediately, after looking at my X-rays (4 bite wings and upper and lower front, 6 in all) started taking photos of my teeth with what I assumed to be a fiber optic probe. He then proceded to try to sell me on caps and procelain cosmetic coverings of my teeth in what I would say was a moderately hard sell, continuing after I stated, several times, that I had no interest. My teeth are relatively good looking, having be straightened following periodontal work in the late 80s. I have no obvious decay or broken teeth showing.

He finally gave up on he selling and we started discussing the work that was scheduled. Mind you that I had simply scheduled a general cleaning. He told me that he would not do just a "level 1" cleaning but had to do a "level 2" and really thought he should be doing a "level 3" cleaning, both significantly more expensive than the general ("level 1") cleaning which I had requested. We discussed this and his point was that the use of the ultrasonic cleaning probe was "special" and not included in the general cleaning. It's use increased the cost of the cleaning to $172! Mind you that the dental plan of which he was an acknowledged member, listed a cleaning at $29, periodontal maintenance at $60 and the most expensive, periodontal scaling and root planing, at $94!

He steadfastly refused to do what all my dentists in the past have done with a general cleaning, use ultrasonic probe, manual scraping and polishing. I refused and the discussion ended there, the scheduled cleaning not being undertaken. Dr. Ducote provide me with a suggested plan of care that included $422 of work.over and above the cleaning with a dental plan savings of $35. This was vs $457, a savings of 7.7% vs plan-published plan of from 50% to over 80%.

I subsequently called six different dentists in our area and inquired specifically about the procedure and costs. All stated that use of the ultrasonic cleaning probe along with the manual scraper and rotary polisher were standard in a basic cleaning and the higher degrees of cleaning were generally for persons having various degrees of peridontal problems which I do not have. They all had costs between $75 and $90 for the cleaning.

Needless to say, I would not return to this dentist. I believe he is profligate in his approach and more interested in paying for his "very expensive building" than providing excellent service for a reasonable price.
