Your initial oral examination includes a visual examination, charting, periodontal probing, diagnosis and treatment recommendations. Dr. Cowitt will also take x-rays, which will include periapical x-rays for proper diagnosis of the anterior (front) and posterior (back) teeth as well as bite-wing x-rays for proper diagnosis of proximal decay of posterior teeth.
Cleanings and Periodontal Treatment
All patients should have a standard cleaning at least twice a year. A child should have a cleaning and fluoride treatment twice a year. We have two hygienists on staff to treat our patients.
Fillings Resin and Amalgam
We use both tooth colored resin filings that are cured to match your teeth and amalgam (silver-colored) fillings that are used for posterior teeth because it is a more durable material. If an amalgam filling shows in your smile we can replace it with a tooth-colored resin filling.
Root Canals
Dr. Bea Kind our resident endodontist performs root canals on anterior, premolar and molar teeth by appointment in our office. Dr. Kind is both experienced and gentle.
Crowns and Veneers
You can have a new beautiful smile with all-porcelain crowns or veneers on anterior teeth. Crowns are synthetic caps, usually made of a material like porcelain or a combination of porcelain and metal placed on the top of a tooth. Crowns are typically used to restore a tooth's function and appearance following a restorative procedure such as a root canal. When decay in a tooth has become so advanced that large portions of the tooth must be removed, crowns are often used to restore the tooth. For the posterior teeth, the latest technology in porcelain and porcelain fused to metal crowns can be utilized to insure a beautiful, natural looking smile. Veneers, also called laminates, are wafer-thin custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth changing their color, shape, size of length.
Bridges and Dentures
Bridges are natural-looking dental appliances that can replace a section of missing teeth. Bridges are custom-made so they are barely noticeable and can restore the natural contour of teeth as well as the proper bite relationship between upper and lower teeth. Bridges are sometimes referred to as fixed partial dentures because they are semi-permanent and are bonded to existing teeth or implants. Some bridges are removable and can be cleaned by the wearer; others need to be removed by a dentist.
Dental Implants
Implants are titanium structures that are placed in the area of the tooth normally occupied by the root. Implants are anchored to the jawbone and act as a foundation for an artificial tooth or permanent bridge. In some cases implants can be used to attach dentures. While Dr. Cowitt does not place the implant, usually performed by an oral surgeon he does make and insert the implant crowns and bridgework.
Tooth Whitening or Bleaching
Our state-of-the-art, in-office Zoom Bleaching system will make your teeth whiter in less than 2 hours. Another option is our home bleaching system you take with you for results in 2 weeks. You can also consider a combination program of both systems for optimal, long-term results.
