I switched my primary care provider to Dr. Breier last year after seeing several positive reviews. My first visit left a good impression: he seemed friendly, caring, and attentive. He asked many questions, which I answered openly. What I didn’t realize at the time was that he would use those answers to classify the visit as something billable beyond a standard annual physical. I’d never been charged for a routine physical before, so this came as a surprise.

Despite this, I returned this year for another annual physical. Unfortunately, this visit was extremely upsetting.

At the beginning of the appointment, Dr. Breier asked if a Yale student could participate in my exam. I agreed. She asked me a series of standard questions, which I answered. Then Dr. Breier came in, continued the conversation, and during our discussion, I casually asked whether I should get a certain vaccine soon. He said I should and said, “In fact we’re going to do it now,” and turned to the student saying, “You’re doing it.” She looked visibly flustered and said, “Oh boy.” Before I could say anything, they both left the room to retrieve the vaccine.

When they returned, I explained that I would be lifting heavy furniture the next day, so I couldn’t afford a sore arm. He brushed this off, saying it should be fine. He then began walking the student through the most basic steps of giving an injection — from removing the syringe cap to using alcohol swabs — clearly indicating that this was her first time administering a shot. I told him twice that I was uncomfortable. He ignored me, joking, “Do you want to hold my hand?”

When I asked directly whether it was her first time giving a shot, he said no — but she stayed silent, visibly nervous, which only increased my concern. I never gave consent for her to administer the vaccine, but before I could process what was happening, it was done.

I left the appointment shocked and upset. My arm was in severe pain for days. Then, to make matters worse, I received another bill — again coded as an office visit, despite it being my annual physical.

This experience left me feeling disrespected, unheard, and manipulated. I don’t believe what happened was ethical, and I certainly won’t be returning to Dr. Breier.
