My approach to providing care to my patients starts with active listening. This helps me provide insights into the options that patients have, both in their workup and the treatments that are going to be available to them. Traditionally, medicine was very paternalistic. A provider would tell a patient to do something and their expectation was that the patient would follow that advice. But healthcare is in a different space today. I look at myself as more of a guide to help patients make the best health choices that fit their personal goals. Today, medicine is much more a team sport that is made up of patients, families, care providers, clinical staff and many other components. Achieving success for our patients in this environment is about working together to meet our patients’ health care goals. As providers we can’t live a patient’s life for them. But we can work together to ensure that the important resources are available to make the best personal health choices possible. Medicine is a partnership. If patients have identifiable health goals they are working to achieve, they’re much more likely to be engaged. They will make meaningful changes because it’s important to them on a personal level. I grew up in this community. The most rewarding and exciting aspect of my job is helping the community as a whole grow healthier, one patient at a time.
