I am writing this review to inform others who may be considering Dr. Michael McCormick (Panama City, FL) for their hip replacement surgery. I am a 60 year old woman in good health and had been suffering pain in my hips for about the last 5 years. I came to the conclusion that I would need to get both my hips replaced in order to enhance my quality of life. In January 2013, Dr. McCormick performed my right hip replacement using hardware from Smith Nephew. Dr. McCormick used the anterior approach which he promotes as being “better for the patient”. This approach is more difficult and is being promoted by doctors who are trying to “stand-out” in a competitive surgical environment. I believe many circumstances contributed to a very difficult surgery where I lost a lot of blood and had to get a transfusion of 5 units. Some of these circumstances are Dr. McCormick’s lack of experience with the anterior approach as well as him using hardware that was not compatible with my body. I went through 8 months of recovery filled with chronic pain and spent countless hours in physical therapy “hoping” that my hip would feel better and this was just part of the recovery needed. In October 2013, I decided to look for a different surgeon to perform my other hip replacement. During a consultation with a highly skilled hip replacement doctor out of The Andrews Institute (Gulf Breeze, FL), I was told that my first hip replacement was going to have to be revised. A year after my first hip replacement, in January 2014, I proceeded to get my other hip replaced with the surgeon out of Andrews Institute. The surgery and recovery was completely different. Within weeks of this surgery, my second hip felt better than the first. I went to physical therapy to help my new hip replacement prepare for the revision that was needed. In May 2014, I had to undergo a revision for the hip replacement surgery performed by Dr. McCormick. In this surgery, my new doctor had to break my femur bone because the Smith and Nephew stem hardware that Dr. McCormick chose to use was embedded in my bone. This was a revision surgery that should have never happened. I have since recovered from my third hip replacement surgery and am finally feeling back to normal. I am writing this review to inform others to do your due diligence in finding a capable surgeon that is experienced with their approach as well as the hardware they chose to use with their patients.
