I had a very bad experience at RENT (Rockland Ear Nose and Throat). On March 2, 2017 I was seen by Dr. Berson because of hoarseness and difficulties in singing. There was a complete disregard for me as a patient. The doctor was in a hurried state. She didn’t even listen to my story of symptoms and when they started. The nurse listened to my story. But she didn’t write down exactly what I said; she wrote down her interpretation of what I said. This is what the doctor read. The first thing Dr. Berson said to me when she came in the room was “you don’t have to tell me why you are here. I just read what the nurse wrote”. I have never had a doctor say that to me! If the doctor had heard my exact words telling of my symptoms and when they started, she might have come to a different conclusion. After looking down my throat, she wrote many things on a sheet of paper my “patient to do list”. She wrote so fast that I had to ask the nurse to help me read what she wrote.
She told me what I should do (my to-do list) so quickly that I couldn’t comprehend what she was saying. After a while I asked her to clarify what my diagnosis was. She said she saw dryness, redness and some mucus in my throat. She said that I had acid reflux and allergies. I told her that I don’t have any symptoms of acid reflux. She still insisted that I had acid reflux. She prescribed Zantac 2 times per day and Flonase once a day. I asked her if this would clear up my hoarseness and not being able to sing and she said no. I needed to be tested for allergies. This was further indicated on the sheet for my “Next Visit Plans”.
The staff was unhelpful. I left 3 messages for Mary, the medical assistant, regarding my medication. On the fourth call (which was 2 weeks after my appointment with Dr. Berson) Mary just happened to answer the phone. I told her that I had left three messages and why didn’t she call me. She said that she didn’t call me back because she was very busy. I also left three messages for Lisa, the allergy nurse. Dr. Berson told me that I would not get better until we found out what I was allergic to. She wrote on my RENT future plans sheet under “Next Visit Plans” “Allergy Testing”. Two and a half weeks after my appointment with Dr. Berson, Lisa, the allergy nurse, called me to make an appointment. She said that she didn’t get any of my messages that I had called. I then went to another ENT doctor who found I had a frozen vocal chord and a nodule on my Thyroid. Dr. Berson never checked my neck – she was in too much of a hurry.
She's very passionate about educating people on sleep disorders and was the only Dr out of numerous ones I saw last year to provide me a reason for my exhaustion! I look forward to my next visit to learn even more about my condition! And I look forward to some much needed rest! Thank you Dr. Berson!!!!
