About

Robert Pohl, MD

What to Expect At your first visit, after completing some brief paperwork I will see you for a 45-minute appointment. Generally, an evaluation and treatment plan can be completed in that time. I will ask you about your concerns and symptoms and also ask you about your life in general; your education, work, social life, and home life. I will also survey other possible symptoms that you may have and ask about your health habits. We will then have a discussion about the likely diagnosis and treatment options. Most patients will then receive a prescription and are asked to return in two or three weeks for follow up; you may also receive a referral to a therapist if you feel that it would be helpful.
Most follow up appointments are 15-minute appointments; twenty to 30-minute appointments are also available. You should call me if you have unexpected or intolerable side effects. Outside of normal office hours there is an answering service that can reach me. As with any doctor’s office, for any true or life-threatening emergency it often makes more sense to call to 911 or go to the emergency room.
Generally, follow-up visits continue to be at 2-3 week intervals until you start to feel better. Visits then become more spread out, with the eventual goal of having a short visit every three months to check on your progress. Most patients who are doing well come to the office for quarterly 15-minute visits.

Services I provide treatment on an outpatient basis for anxiety and mood disorders. Anxiety disorders include panic disorder (recurrent anxiety attacks), social anxiety (anxiety that interferes with most social interactions such as meeting new people and dating, and some individuals who only have performance anxiety), generalized anxiety (excessive free-floating anxiety or worry), obsessions, compulsions, and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. I also treat depression and other mood disorders, including major depression and bipolar disorder. I provide medication management for bulimia and premenstrual symptoms. I also treat adults and older adolescents who have attention deficit disorder and I use some newer medications to help patients with alcohol abuse remain abstinent. I do not provide inpatient care and medication is not a substitute for a comprehensive substance abuse therapy program.
