I have a daughter that saw Dr. Foushee when she was 6 or 7 years old and the doctor wanted to head off potential issues with her orthodontics so she put braces, called it phase I, and charged me $2400. My daughter had the braces on for approx 2 years and then she took them off and we moved to another state. After seeing two doctors in WI and coming back to Louisville and seeing two more doctors I have come to the opinion that nothing was corrected. Several doctors have agreeded to my thoughts but are very careful how far they go with their opinion because they do not want to talk about other dentist so all me and and my husband know is that my daughter still has all the problems she had previously a very LARGE overbite, her teeth were still crowded so I cannot imagine that any arch expanding happened, and her teeth do not set properly together when she closes her mouth. (and a new problem is she had braces on for so long that the surface of her teeth has etching I am assuming from the brackets). Most of the dentist I have spoken with do not believe in phase I but if they do it is only very short term. This would have meant she got her braces off before 12 months and put them back on later. I do not think that any of her issues were corrected and now try talking her into having them back on after wearing them for 2 years for nothing. She is very disappointed and I felt that I should notify Dr. Foushee but when I went to meet with her and discuss my findings she did not seem interested in making me feel better about the things that she felt had been corrected she just kept focusing on what she feels needs to be done now and gave me an estimate for an additional $5005. One more thing. I made the mistake of giving her the name of a dentist I was going to speak with for a consult and she called him before I got there. I am guessing to head off any confirming of my disappointments. By the time we got to the appointment all he was willing to do was try his best to refer me back to her. I guess he did not want to be responsible for stealing a friends patient away all I wanted was his unbiased opinion so that was a wasted trip. Anyway I was just going to move on and take my losses until she did this now needless to say I think others should know and take this into consideration with choosing an orthodontist.I feel I have some responisibility in this also I wish I had researched and knew to not just go with the thought that the doctor knows best and not talk with them regularly about what we are accomplishing or that I should have questioned the length of time she had her wearing braces and had them taken off.
If you google orthodontic malpractice you will find others that have had similar issues so just do your homework and get lots of opinions before making a decision.
