Continuing with ourNational Women's Health Week discussion on the Top Five Health Concerns forWomen, today's article focuses on Breast Cancer. Breast cancer is the numberone form of cancer in women and is only second to lung cancer as the leadingcause of death for women.
With the recentattention to breast cancer, sensationalized by the media with coverage ofcelebrity health choices, there is a rise in concern as to whether the"breast cancer gene" is something that can be dealt with by using sometimesradical preventative measures, such as mastectomy, to decrease the possibilityof the disease from ever developing. Cancer experts are concerned that this fearof breast cancer can sometimes be exaggerated.
Remember that only 2-5%of breast cancer is linked to mutations in BRACA1 and BRAC2 genes.
General Tips for BreastHealth.
- Don't Smoke. Prettybasic. The cure for smoking is cancer. Second and third hand smoke also counts.Smoking is not only detrimental to breast health, but also contributes to lungdisease and other health issues.
- Maintain a HealthyWeight. Losing pounds and keeping them off will lowerthe risk of most cancers, including breast cancer, and will reduce your chancesof developing diabetes and high blood pressure; and is helpful in maintainingjoint and bone health as well.
- Exercise.Exercise is critical for preventing and helping with cancer survival. A strongbody find it easier to ward off the disease; and if diagnosed with breast or anotherform of cancer, a person's fitness healthy fitness level will be necessary forthe long road of treatment and recovery.
- Healthy Diet. Eat a healthy dietthat includes lots of fruits and vegetables. Fruitsand veggies are an important part of any cancer discussion.
- Toxic Environment.Reduceyour exposure to toxic chemicals. This includes household cleaners, pesticides,and commercial products.
- Stress and EmotionalWell-Being. Eighty-fivepercent (85%) of disease and 60-80% ofchronic illness, including cancer, are related to one's emotions and stresslevels. Allowing time for self-care that includes tending to personal needs andnurturing mind, body and spirit is helpful in maintaining emotional well-being.
- Sleep.Everyoneneeds at least 5 hours of quality sleep per night.
