Flu Shot Recommendations

Recommended to persons who want to reduce the risk of becoming ill with influenza or transmitting it to others

Beginning this year 2008-09 influenza season, annual vaccination of all children aged 5 - 18 is recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). Children age 6 months - 4 yrs with conditions that place them at increased risk ie hospitalization within past year or immune deficiencies should also receive the vaccine.

Pregnant women, age greater than 50, people of any age with chronic medical conditions, nursing home or long-term care facility residents, healthcare workers.

Most common adverse reaction is soreness and redness at the injection site. I can say that when I received the shot this year I had mild to moderate soreness in my arm for 48 hrs. It is also possible to get runny nose or nasal congestion.

Do not hesitate to find out more information about the flu shot from your primary care physician.
