What is Health?

Dr Gregory Crowley

Get sick, go to the doctor, get a prescription, take some drugs and get
better. This is what most of us call "health" care.

I find "health" to be a very interesting word. It elicits a wide range
of feelings and an even wider range of definitions.

If you ask a neighbor, "Do you want health?" most would answer swiftly
"Yes I do."

It starts to get interesting when you ask, "What does health mean?"

When I ask this question many respond with something along the
lines of "health means you feel good." This is the concept of health
for most people... feeling good. However, many people throughout the
world feel well and are actually very ill. Some may even die in the
near future. Perhaps quite suddenly, shocking their loved ones who
thought they seemed fine.

Often the first symptom of heart disease or stroke is death. Was that
person who just died of a massive heart attack healthy? Of course not,
but they felt fine. So, there must be something more to being healthy
than just feeling good.

When I first looked up the definition of health in Dorlands Medical
Dictionary I was pleasantly surprised the definition fit so nicely with
my own. Dorlands lists health as "a state of complete physical, mental
and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or
infirmity."

This respected medical text does not even mention how you feel, nor do
any of the other dictionaries I have come across.

Apparently there is so much more to health than simply feeling good.

ARE YOU HEALTHY?
If you answered yes, how do you know? If you answered no, what are you
doing about this crisis?

I urge everyone reading this article to ask themselves these very
important questions as well as the following.

Am I healthier today than I was 5 years ago? Will I be healthier in 5
years than I am today? Do I want to be healthy or just not sick? What
do your answers mean to you? Will you do something about it? When?

Perhaps much of the confusion behind health comes from the incorrect
assertion that our health care system is indeed a health care system. I
prefer to identify it as "sick care." Precisely what it is designed
for, to treat disease.

You might ask, "What other choice do we have?"

Plenty. Wellness Chiropractic is only one of the many options, albeit
an important one. Wellness Chiropractic bases all of its actions on
restoring and maintaining health. It makes perfect sense that if we can
maintain health, we will likely have less disease. This, in turn, could
cost us less money in taxes, insurance and out-of-pocket expense's.

Indeed it does.

My goal for you, all of my patients and readers, is "Health
Expression." From time to time I will be blogging for you in this wonderful
Community. I want to help you discover wellness so you to can express your true and full health potential.
