Part I Manipulation Under Anesthesia (MUA) offers help for chronic pain sufferers who have tired other forms of treatment such as physical therapy, chiropractic, pain medications, etc., but still have chronic pain. This procedure is safe, non-invasive, non-surgical and gentle. This procedure was originally designed for patients who have had a failed surgery and is also used for people who have been told they need surgery.
Manipulation Under Anesthesia, or MUA, is a highly specialized, non-invasive technique for chronic pain patients who are no longer responding to regular conservative care. Through stretching and manipulation, MUA works by releasing adhesions and scar tissues to restore normal mobility while the patient is in a safe and short "twilight sleep." As an alternative therapy to surgery or other procedures, MUA consistently generates dramatic, life-improving results for patients that qualify for the procedure.
Manipulation Under Anesthesia procedures are performed in an ambulatory surgery center or hospital. A team of medical professionals perform this procedure. Commonly there is an RN present along with a medical anesthesiologist (MD or DO), a primary MD, DO or DC, and a secondary MD, DO or DC.
Manipulation Under Anesthesia is very similar to what takes place in a chiropractor's office but is much more effective as there is no pain or spasm response to prevent full range of motion. A small amount of anesthesia is administered by a qualified anesthesiologist and the procedure lasts about 15 minutes. After the procedure the patient wakes up and returns home the same day. Usually this procedure is performed once a week for three weeks and does not have to be redone.
