International Women’s Day is coming up. It celebrates how proud we are to be women. It celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and it occurs every year on March 8. Certain books throughout the decades have been written to help establish a proud-to-be-a-woman feeling. This is a list of 5 books that every woman should add to their "to read" list to honor femininity.
1. Matilda
The book by Roald Dahl is probably known by most due to the movie. The story of a little girl with magical powers inside her captured audiences everywhere. If you have only seen the movie and have never given the book a chance, try it now. It will take you back to your childhood and the times you believed in your own magic.
2. A Thousand Splendid Suns
The two female characters in the this book by Khaled Hosseini show great strength and endurance throughout the duration of the book. Read on as their friendship flourishes, not often seen in today’s world full of more frenemies than friends.
3. Bad Feminist
Bad Feminist is a more recent addition to the list, written in 2014 by Roxane Gay. The author shares her own experiences and talks about the idea of feminism in different people’s minds. The true goal, she feels, is for all women to come together despite their differences. It is about lifting each other up, no matter the circumstances.
4. Her
Twin sisters share this story by Christa Parravani. The book is a memoir written by Christa, with excerpts of her twin sister Cara’s journal woven throughout. She explains the harsh realities of living without your twin when they are so much a part of you. The heartwarming, intimate, and sometimes startling story is intriguing.
5. NW
Zadie Smith has done it again with her novel, NW. She previously wrote Beauty, which captivated audiences thanks to compassionate and sweet-natured speech. NW offers a much more radical approach. The narrative styles change throughout the story, always giving you a unique perspective and keeping you at the edge of your seat.
