What is Chiropractic and is it for me?

Chiropractic is a profession that was founded on a model of healthcare called vitalism. This model or idea, is founded in the principle that the body has the innate (or naturally within from birth) ability to heal itself. This can be seen and evidenced by a simple cut on your hand. The body automatically knows exactly what to do, which is quite a bit, in order to heal this cut.

The same is true for most diseases that are out there. Heart disease is caused when the body looses the ability to self-regulate or maintain homeostasis. This can be caused by either chemical (toxins), physical, or emotional (also chemical) malfunctions or what we chiropractors refer to as subluxations.

Being that most people think of chiropractic as a treatment for only neck pain or back pain, most people are missing the "Big Idea" behind what chiropracTIC is all about. Only 6% of the nerves in the body are for pain. This leaves 94% for other functions. These other functions are for maintaining the balance or homeostasis in the body, and for regulating all the other processes that take place other than just sensing pain.

Chiropractors are well educated on the human body and the causes of what most people refer to as diseases. However, what I tell my patients is chiropractic is a simple concept. The brain and nervous system are in constant communication with the rest of the body. This is so that it can monitor and regulate all that takes place.

What do chiropractors DO? Well we focus primarily on the vertebral subluxation complex. I know it is a fancy sounding thing, but it's rather simple. When the vertebrae or spinal bones move out of alignment, it can cause pressure or interference in the nervous system. I read that it only takes the pressure of a human hair on a spinal nerve to alter the function of that nerve. Chiropractors are specially trained on how to locate and correct spinal mis-alignments or subluxations. When a subluxation is corrected, it allows the body and brain to communicate properly; thus, decreasing the chance that the vitalistic energy or homeostasis is decreased or affected.

Everyone should at least get checked for the presence of nerve interference due to subluxations. It can help restore your health in ways you never thought possible.

In a future blog, I will tell you my story of chiropractic, and why I chose to become a chiropractor. Stay tuned, you will want to read this, especially if you have children. No parent would want to ignore a chance to prevent their child from a life of suffering or disease, if they knew there was someone out there who could help them....

Sincerely,

Dr. Adam M. Francis, D.C.

Great read ! I am anxious to hear your story of how you chose to study to be a Chiropractor. Every living person wishes to be healthy whether they admit it or not. We can make choices ourselves to get healthier like diet an exercise but if we don't take care of our spine and seek help when we are hurting then we are overlooking an important way to better health.
