Dr. Sylvia Hood Washington has been involved in public health for almost 30 years. She has a particular interest and skill in using natural and holistic medicine in dealing with environmentally related diseases like asthma, diabetes, multiple chemical sensitivity, obesity, stress, lupus, allergies and COPD (chronic obstruction pulmonary disease). She has training in traditional health sciences (MPH, Epidemiology) and alternative medicine (ND, Naturopathy). She is wrapping up her certification as a yoga instructor with the Yoga Alliance this fall 2009. This certification is being completed through the training program at the Kriya Temple in the lineage of Goswami Kriyananda. She is also actively engaged in the Healing Yoga Institute (San Francisco)’s two year yoga therapy training program that was created under the lineage of Krishnamayachara as taught by T.K.V. Desikachar .
Dr. Washington is a published author and the editor in chief of an environmental health journal, Environmental Justice (Mary Ann Liebert Publishers, Inc.). She consults regularly with environmental law firms to help them understand the history of industrial and municipal planning’s impact on human health. She is a Research Associate Professor at UIC School of Public Health in the Environmental Occupational Health Sciences Division and an adjunct professor of public health at Benedictine University. Sylvia is the founder and executive director of Environmental Health Research Associates, LLC (EHRA, LLC); a private environmental epidemiology and history research group.
