Alexa Sparkman has a Masters degree in nutrition from the University of Texas at Austin and is a registered and licensed dietitian. In addition to experience in state government as Director of the Texas Nutrition Education and Training (NET) Program, Alexa has promoted wellness at the corporate level as a health educator for Johnson and Johnson Health Management Inc. In 1987 Alexa began a private practice dealing with all aspects of medical nutrition therapy. As co-author of the program "Overcoming Mind Hunger", Alexa has worked and studied extensively in the area of eating disorders. Having recently taken a faculty position in the nutrition department at the University of Texas at Austin, Alexa teaches nutrition counseling to aspiring young nutritionists. Along with holding numerous local and state positions in professional associations, Alexa has contributed professional services to many organizations including the YMCA, American Heart Association, United Action for the Elderly, and the United Way. Areas of professional recognition include Young Dietitian of the Year for 1985 by the American Dietetic Association, USDA commendations for exemplary performance in directing the NET program, TDHS Career Woman Award, and Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.

Interests: An active member of Hyde Park Baptist Church since 1977, Alexa had served in various capacities teaching children and adults. With husband, Roy, and her three sons, Alexa enjoys many activities including golf, water sports, and snow skiing.
