In the 1970s, Marla Ahlgrimm altered the American perception of women’s health by putting a name to a now common recurring ailment in women. Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) was a term that had previously only been used in Europe—and sparingly at that. However, while working in a pharmacy in Madison, Wisconsin, Marla Ahlgrimm, a pharmacist, recognized a symptom pattern in a female patient and began to research her severe symptoms, which included mood swings, fatigue, and depression.
In the early 1980s, Marla Ahlgrimm once again impacted the world of women’s health with the opening of Madison Pharmacy Associates. The pharmacy, which was the first pharmacy in the nation to specialize in women’s health, pointed attention to PMS and other hormone related disorders. Marla Ahlgrimm not only worked with patients throughout the country but also provided a toll-free telephone number for physician referrals. She also published “PMS Access,” a newsletter with information and solutions on everything from hot flashes to weight management.
Women’s Health America Inc. was founded in 1993 by Marla Ahlgrimm to tackle an even more comprehensive range of women’s health issues.
Marla Ahlgrimm is an accomplished author who has been published in many peer-reviewed publications, and she has written regularly for the American Journal of Natural Medicine. Her full-length manuscripts include The HRT Solution and the widely circulated Self-Help for Premenstrual Syndrome.
Marla Ahlgrimm believes that women deserve to have their hormone imbalance disorders managed with respect and professionalism. For more than 30 years, this University of Wisconsin distinguished alumna has done just that while making access to her services an easy and affordable option for all women.
