In addition to traditional counseling skills  I also offer telephone counseling to clients who are home-bound due to a chronic, life-challenging illness.  I have struggled with my own health issues so know what it's like to need help but cannot go to a practitioner for it.  Many relationships are challenged when a family member or friend, co-worker, or other, struggle with their health.  For those who can work, there can be misunderstandings with co-workers and bosses who expect you to meet your job requirements when you can't, need to go in late or leave early, and take more days off than is considered acceptable. In addition there is the stress of lost wages from not being able to work.   Some people have to go through the process of getting on a disability plan either private or Social Security or both and this process can be cumbersome and confusing.  One can go through numerous feelings of disbelief about their health and where they are in life, disbelief from those in their support network or no support at all.  With all major difficult changes in life most deal with the grief process of denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. 
 Being a parent with a chronic illness poses multiple challenges and resulting emotions from the inability to be who you used to be and the parent you want to be and know you could be if not for poor health.  Children, as well as other family members and friends, too suffer from feelings of denial, anger, resentment, guilt, fear and more.
It is during these difficult times when we could immensely benefit from an experienced person to help guide and lead the way to a more fulfilling and rewarding life.  I am here for you.
Also, for 12 years I facilitated supports groups for people with chronic illnesses.  In these groups, I helped members find their own best answers on how to deal with their condition(s) and relationship issues, how best to communicate with their doctors and other health practitioners, work on setting good boundaries for self-care, saying "no" without guilt, and developing a better relationship with themselves.
Psychotropic Medications:  For those individuals who want to or are tapering off psychiatric medications under their physicians supervision, I can offer support and guidance on learning new coping skills to deal with the feelings that surface or resurface so that one doesn't become overwhelmed by them and want to give up.  The process can be lengthy and considerably uncomfortable at times but with the right skills and understanding about the process, one can achieve the goal of safely coming off their medications and build more self-confidence and internal control over their own lives so they don't need to resort to chemical treatment for their issues.   Just to be clear, I do not advise a client to come off medications or on anything relating to what medications are available and what they are for as that is not within my scope of practice.  
Spousal/Domestic Abuse:  If you have already left your abuser and want to benefit from learning more about how domestic violence has affected your life, decisions, relationships and avoid entering yet another abusive relationship, we will work with education about the battered-person's syndrome and how to get out of that, build self-esteem, become aware of the signs of a batterer, learn safety measures and precautions to take, address recovery from co-dependence and much more.  Too, if you are experiencing another form of abuse (i.e. elder abuse, caregiver abuse), we will apply the necessary skills and actions to resolve this issue as well.

Techniques and Approaches to Therapy

The first few sessions are spent in my gathering history from a client and building a good rapport.  In almost all cases, I like to make a Genogram, a three generational diagram depicting who's related to whom, different styles of relating and communicating, learned behaviors passed from one generation to another, religious beliefs (if any), addictions (if any), habits, just any behavior that can explain where you learned yours and that which needs to be addressed.

I incorporate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) which is a type of psychotherapeutic treatment that helps patients understand the thoughts and feelings that influence behaviors.  CBT is commonly used to treat a wide range of disorders, including phobias, addiction, depression and anxiety.  Cognitive behavioral therapy is generally short-term and focused on helping clients deal with a very specific problem.  During the course of treatment, people learn how to identify and change destructive or disturbing thought patterns that have a negative influence on behavior and, as a result, change behavior all to achieve improved mental health.

I also utilize Psychodynamic therapy, also known as insight-oriented therapy, which focuses on unconscious processes as they are manifested in a person’s present behavior. The goals of psychodynamic therapy are a client’s self-awareness and understanding of the influence of the past on present behavior. In its brief form, a psychodynamic approach enables the client to examine unresolved conflicts and symptoms that arise from past dysfunctional relationships and how they manifest in their lives.

This all can sound so technical so here I want to reassure you I work empathically and with genuine concern for your mental well-being.   I want to get to know you and why you came to therapy.  I will do my utmost to patiently guide you in this healing process towards building self-esteem and confidence so later you can find your own best answers.
