The amount of seminars and continuing education Dr. Mumma has participated in have allowed her to expand her practice beyond that of a "typical chiropractor." The following is the short list of services provided at Triangle Chiropractic and Rehabilitation Center. There's a lot more than just neck pain relief and back pain therapy! Dr. Mumma continues to further her education in order to better support the needs of her patients, and serve the Triangle as the most comprehensive manual therapy office.

Adjustments
Chiropractic joint manipulation – commonly referred to as adjusting – is used to release restricted joints of the spine and extremities. Joints often become restricted due to improper posture and/or poor muscle activity. Once restricted, the body starts laying down scar tissue in attempt to stabilize the joint. This compensatory pattern continues and can eventually lead to complete lack of movement in the joint. A restricted joint can cause nearby joints to become hypermobile, or move excessively. Hypermobility can lead to degeneration and pain in joints. These two aforementioned things can cause undue pressure or tension on surrounding soft tissues and nerves. By applying an adjustment to a restricted segment, the joint regains motion that would be unattainable using only exercise or posture correction. Besides increased motion, adjusting also relieves pain and relaxes overactive muscles. If patients prefer not to hear or feel a "popping" noise, Dr. Mumma also has various options for mobilization, which can be just as effective in pain relief.

Functional Rehabilitation
Adjustments are applied in-office by Dr. Mumma, but patients can help themselves by participating in various rehabilitation exercises at home. Most of the exercises prescribed will require minimal equipment. These functional exercises can empower patients to become responsible for their pain/dysfunction, thus obtaining quicker results in fewer treatments than a traditional chiropractor. Exercises can help with everything from low back pain to migraines! Dr. Mumma has found that patients who participate in their care more than by just showing up at their appointments tend to have better outcomes and more satisfaction in their care.

Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization
Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS) is derived from a technique pioneered by Dr. Vaclav Vojta that was originally intended to treat children with cerebral palsy. Vojta's technique has expanded since its inception in the 1960’s, and is now indicated for a variety of conditions in both the child and the adult. Prof. Pavel Kolar further evolved this technique to make it more dynamic and to yield faster results. This is known as DNS: the purpose of the technique is to promote proper activation and coordination of the neuromuscular system. This has yielded amazing success in cerebral palsy, scoliosis, and stroke cases to name a few. While DNS is routinely used in Europe, it has only recently started to gain popularity in the United States. Dr. Mumma is part of a small group of practitioners in the US who have extensive training and experience in DNS therapy, which is quickly gaining exposure and demand.

McKenzie Method
Robin McKenzie is a physical therapist who has spent his career dedicated to the treatment of patients suffering from discogenic pain. Patients who suffer from disc-related pain tend to have both movement and function loss due to pain and physical barriers related to disc protrusions or herniations. When the center portion of a vertebral disc is under too much load, it bulges through cracks in the outer portion of the disc, sometimes resulting in pain. If this bulge puts pressure on the nerves surrounding the disc, it can cause radiating pain all the way down to the hands and feet. If left untreated, this can eventually lead to loss of muscle strength and tone, as well as loss of sensation. Utilizing the McKenzie Diagnosis and Treatment approach, patients learn self-treatment protocols for returning to function.
