With help from a registered dietitian, patients will understand how certain foods can either raise or lower blood sugar.  Individuals will be instructed on choosing the right types of carbohydrates along with the appropriate serving size. Patients with hypertension will learn how to identify foods high in sodium and replace them with their lower sodium counterparts.  In conjunction to a low sodium diet, patients will learn how to include minerals that are effective for blood pressure reduction such as magnesium, calcium, and potassium.  Patients will receive dining out tips and information on reading food labels for sodium content.

High Cholesterol:

Treatment for both hyperlipidemia and dyslipidemia involve altering the amounts and types of fats that an individual consumes.  Patients will be educated on how to lower their intake of saturated fats while increasing their intake of heart healthy unsaturated fats.  Identifying sources of trans fats and learning how to avoid them are included in the treatment plan.  Recipe substitution and low fat cooking techniques are applied as well.

Gastrointestinal Disorders and Food Allergies:

Nutrition therapy for gastrointestinal disorders (IBS, Crohns dz, colitis, GERD, celiac, etc) includes educating the patient on foods that can aggravate certain conditions.  Dietary modifications to prevent flare ups or GI distress often involve dietary modification and or elimination of trigger foods.

Behavioral and Attention Deficit Disorders:
	
Certain diets or food restrictions recommended by a registered dietitian can help improve a childs behavioral level and/or attention span allowing them to experience life to the fullest.  A diet specifically tailored to meet a pediatric patients needs in this area will be created and explained in detail.  Parents and pediatric patients will come away with the ability to identify different foods and ingredients that trigger certain behaviors.

Weight Management:

Whether a patients goal is weight loss, weight gain, or treatment of disordered eating, maintenance of a healthy weight is correlated with a lower incidence of disease. Behavioral techniques are taught to patients as a way to modify non-hunger related food intake. Using metabolic testing a patients calorie needs are measured directly to ensure that nutrient needs are accurately met.

Education on nutrient intake and timing along with proper hydration are part of the training plan.  Nutrition Periodization for different stages of conditioning, competing, as well as for the off season are applied as the athletes schedule changes.  .

Stress Fractures, Concussions & Injury:
	
  Patients will also be educated on the specific nutrients, vitamins and minerals that help to prevent as well as facilitate the healing of stress fractures, concussions, and other sports related injuries.  Ensuring that the correct amounts of these nutrients are received while the athlete maintains a healthy body weight during an injury or following surgery are an integral component of treatment.

Sports Specific Meal Plans:
	
Every athlete is different, and each sport requires a specific dietary plan that will help sustain energy and provide proper recovery.  With the help from a registered dietitian, a sports specific meal plan will be tailored to fit the specific dietary needs of the patient.  Recipe suggestions may be provided in order to help a patient obtain the appropriate nutrition needed for their specific sport.  Proper carbohydrate loading, good sources of protein, certain vitamins, and minerals as well as tips on electrolyte repletion and trends in sports nutrition are all addressed.
